Elstow School

Elstow Lower School relocated into new purpose built premises in March 2004. In September 2013 the school was re-named Elstow School, and it became a Primary School. The Year 4 pupils became the first Year 5 cohort and in September 2014 it became a full Primary School with the first Year 6 cohort. A new teaching block and hall was completed in the Summer of 2013 to provide the classrooms and adequate space for the school’s new primary status.

The School is situated in the heart of a new housing development. This housing development has both Housing Association Social Housing as well as some large Owner Occupied detached houses and the school intake reflects this mix.

The majority of our children live on the Abbeyfields estate or along the Mile Road and Elstow Road areas. We have a significant amount of out of catchment area children.

All the buildings are on ground level and one of the teaching blocks is built in a figure-of-eight shape around two internal open-air courtyards. We have separate outside playing areas for reception children and older children as well as a large tarmac playing area with playground activities. We also enjoy a large playing field and an area for adventure play offering opportunities for scrambling, clambering and climbing on wooden ‘Playdale’ equipment and for the elder pupils a ‘Rap’ adventure frame.

The safety of our children is of prime importance to us. All visitors have to use the main entrance.

Our security system compromises of a coded door locking system and CCTV. There is no access through any other doorway during the school day.

The school building is set in pleasant developing grounds with both grass and hard play areas.

There are two outside activity areas. One classroom block is positioned around the two courtyards, one a quiet area and the other with a designed play surface and a sensory garden.

The other classroom block is a linear area which like the whole school has has a quiet calm ambience

There are fourteen classrooms all of which have doors opening on to the outside area. There are laptops in each classroom, wifi throughout the school and a library, all of which are used by all children.

One hall has an impact floor and is used for gym and dance activities as well as doubling up as the dining room.

School meals are prepared on site in the school’s kitchen. The second larger hall accommodates the whole school and is used for indoor PE lessons and whole school assemblies as well as when we have concerts which we share with parents and carers.

The administrative areas contain offices, a medical and meetings room.
