During the last half term, every objective from the year 5 target maps was covered at least once. As such, this term we will be consolidating that learning and progressing children onto harder examples or asking them to use their knowledge in more abstract ways.
To help us build upon the foundations that have already been laid, it would be great if all children had the ability to quickly recall their times tables up to the 12x table. More than this, practising written methods for the 4 operations would also be useful and there are examples of these on the school website.
Our topic this term is ‘Our World’
During the term we will cover all areas of the National Curriculum through this topic.
In Science, we will start by looking at our place in the Solar system, and how the Goldilocks effect has meant our planet is perfect for life, thinking about the other essential conditions, such as fresh water and atmosphere. As part of this we will look at the environmental impact of humans on the planet. We will look at global trade, focussing on Fair Trade and the country of Colombia. Later in the term we will conduct an area study closer to home when looking at the village of Stewartby. Here we will look at the village’s close association with Italian migration to Bedford through the brickwork company and the children will create their own maps, conduct research and learn how to create field sketches.
The migration of Italians to Bedford will also be a history focus where the children will explore how these people adapted to Britain.
Please feel free to research ahead of this topic!
Homework will still be given out on a Friday and must be returned the following Wednesday. If you have any problems with homework set, please come and have a chat.
Please ensure that your child has a quiet place to complete their homework and support them when needed.
Spellings will be handed out on a Friday and tested on the following Thursday. All parents were sent complete Y3/4 and Y5/6 spelling lists at the end of last half term. If these did not make it home then please request another copy.
PE will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Please ensure your child has PE kit in school every day and that it includes a tracksuit or similar warm trousers and top for any Rugby sessions.
Earrings should be removed for PE.
We started the term exploring different poetry and evaluating it for descriptive language, using them to write our own in a similar theme. We are studying the book ‘Journey to Jo’Burg’ by Beverley Naidoo.
The book is set in Apartheid-era South Africa and has raised important questions about what it was like to live in those conditions and understand a narrative from a different culture. Encouraging your child to read a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts will support their understanding during this unit of work.
